Understanding Gratuity in India
Gratuity is a form of retirement or separation benefit that employers provide to employees as a token of appreciation for their long service. It's one of the most significant retirement benefits in India.
Our Gratuity Calculator helps you estimate your gratuity entitlement and understand the calculation methodology.
What is Gratuity?
Gratuity is a lump-sum amount paid by an employer to an employee at the time of retirement, resignation, or termination of service.
Purpose: To recognize the employee's contribution and service rendered to the organization.
Key Features:
One-time payment at the end of service
Generally tax-free up to ₹20 lakh (with certain conditions)
Applicable to employees with 5+ years of service
Specified under the Payment of Gratuity Act, 1972
Eligibility for Gratuity
Employee is eligible if:
Completed 5 years of continuous service (or 5 years total, even with breaks)
Separation due to:
Retirement at 60+ years
Resignation (after 5 years)
Termination without cause
Death or disability in service
Retrenchment
Not Eligible if:
Less than 5 years of service
Terminated for misconduct (in some cases)
Voluntary exit before 5 years (except on medical grounds)
Gratuity Calculation Formula
Formula (for most cases):
Gratuity = (Last Drawn Salary × Service Years) / 26
Where:
Last Drawn Salary = Basic + DA (includes allowances as per contract, but typically excludes HRA, conveyance, medical allowances)
Service Years = Complete years of continuous service
26 = Number of working days per week (5 days × 52 weeks)
Important Note: The formula varies slightly depending on whether DA is included in the salary calculation.
Gratuity Calculation Example
Employee Details:
Current Salary: ₹50,000/month (Basic)
Dearness Allowance (DA): ₹10,000/month
Other Allowances: ₹5,000/month (house rent, conveyance, medical)
Salary for Gratuity: ₹60,000 (Basic + DA, excluding HRA and other allowances)
