In physics, a Force is simply a push or a pull upon an object resulting from the object's interaction with another object. Whenever there is an interaction between two objects, there is a force upon each of the objects.
Because the United States utilizes the Imperial system while the global scientific community utilizes the Metric system, engineers must constantly convert between Imperial "Pounds-force" and Metric "Newtons." Why do we have different units for pushing and pulling?
The Newton is the standard international (SI) unit of force. It is defined based on Sir Isaac Newton's Second Law of Motion ($F = ma$). One Newton is the exact amount of force required to accelerate a 1 kilogram mass at a rate of 1 meter per second squared.
The standard unit of force in the United States Customary System. It is equal to the gravitational force exerted on a mass of one avoirdupois pound on the surface of the Earth. (When Americans talk about "Pounds" of thrust in a jet engine, they are talking about Pounds-force).
A much smaller metric unit used in the older centimeter-gram-second (CGS) system of physics. One dyne is the force required to accelerate a 1-gram mass by 1 centimeter per second squared. It is typically used to measure microscopic forces, like surface tension.
For manual engineering calculations, the critical equivalency is between Newtons and Pounds-force:
1 Pound-force (lbf) = 4.44822 Newtons (N)
1 Newton (N) = 0.224809 Pounds-force (lbf)
1 Newton (N) = 100,000 Dyne
Scenario 1: Jet Engine Thrust
An American aerospace company builds a jet engine that produces 50,000 lbs of thrust (Pounds-force). They need to provide the specifications to the European Space Agency in Newtons.
